Project Overview
Homestake Road, located between Park Avenue and Kearns Boulevard, is a central connection within the Bonanza area. It is lined with residential condos, affordable housing, and businesses. Currently, Homestake Road has minimal pedestrian and bike infrastructure, which incentivizes car-only travel along the corridor. Park City Municipal is committed to active transportation and biking connections and Homestake has potential to improve in that area.
As it stands, the roadway is 28 feet wide, which allows for eight feet of parking and 20 feet for two-way vehicular traffic. Current challenges alsoinclude street parking, snow storage, trash receptacles, and safety for active transportation users including pedestrians and cyclists, as there isn’t dedicated bike or pedestrian infrastructure.
Timeline
2018 | Discussions began for transforming Homestake Road (to align with Bonanza Park area’s redevelopment vision at the time). The vision included improvements to Munchkin Road, Woodbine Way, and Homestake Road.
May 2018 | The City Council approved a Design Professional Services agreement, which initiatedengineering design services for the extension of Munchkin Road to Homestake Road.
December 2021 | Navigating uncertainties around Recycle Utah's relocation, the design effort was refocused to prioritize improvements to Homestake Road while the Arts and Culture District was further evaluated.
2022 |TheCity’s Bonanza Small Area Plan and FeasibilityStudy for the 5-acre parcel, formerly known as the Arts and Culture district begin and include discussions of enhancements on Homestake.
2023 | EngineHouse Development approved by City Council and construction begins.
2023 | Homestake Road waterline replaced from Kearns Boulevard to Park Avenue.
2024|The next stage of infrastructure improvements will be with the storm drain system. These improvements are essential to meet the growing demands in the Bonanza Park area and on the system, to provide system redundancy, and to incorporate best practices for storm water management.
Summary
In July 2023, design work for Homestake Road advanced to a point that enabled the City to understand right-of-way implications of the project. Additional right-of-way was found to bearequirement on a permanent and temporary basis in order to construct the project’s pathways and sidewalks.
The Engineering Department recommended an addendum, with a focus on right-of-way negotiations ahead of construction in 2024-2025 including an initial package for storm drain construction thatis planned for summer 2024.
Throughout this project, ongoing discussions around the Bonanza Small Area Plan and Arts and Culture Feasibility Study have also shaped the project's evolution. The City's commitment to active transportation and biking connections is evident in the proposed project configuration, including sidewalks, multi-use pathways, and improvements to driveway and parking locations.
