Project Purpose & Need

The State of Utah has long recognized and emphasized the risk of wildfire for many years. Due to the potential for fire caused by sparks emitted from electric utilities, Utah Legislation passed House Bill 66, Wildfire Planning and Cost Recovery Amendments in 2020. The new bill requires electric utilities to prepare and submit a wildland fire protection plan in accordance with Utah Code 54-24-201.

Rocky Mountain Power has developed comprehensive wildfire mitigation plans throughout its service territories which are designed to reduce the probability of utility related wildfires and mitigate damage to electric facilities. Specific facilities have been identified to be in Fire High Consequence Areas (FHCA). Improvements proposed for this project were developed to reduce the risk and lessen the impact of wildfires.

Information relating to Rocky Mountain Power’s wildfire safety planning can be accessed here.

Project Scope

The existing Park City-to-Judge transmission line project will rebuild the existing 46-kilowatt transmission line to 138-kilowatt and underground distribution lines. All wood structures will be replaced with steel structures, which will be on average about ten feet taller than existing structures.

Project Timeline

Construction will begin October 2023 and is scheduled to be completed October 2025.

Project Safety

All power lines in Rocky Mountain Power’s system are built to meet or exceed the National Electric Safety Code standards, which is the foundation for electrical safety in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The safety of our community is the primary consideration in the design and installation of poles and wires. For more information from the National Electric Safety Code standards, you can go to IEEE SA - The National Electrical Safety Code® (NESC®)
